the light project

Our Story:

Our story with cancer is a personal and hard one. Dan’s sister Kendra, who was 25 years old, was 38 weeks pregnant with our nephew when she found out she had APL Leukemia. She was rushed to the hospital and within two days she was intubated. She went under an emergency C Section and delivered our amazing nephew, Kallen Nash. She passed away the next morning. It was a lot for our family and it’s been a hard two years. But GOD was there and still is. In fact, He has been so present in all of our lives. I had the honor of taking her maternity photos with her husband, Rob, five days before she passed. Little did I know, that while I was taking those photos, they would be her last. Those images… mean a lot to us as a family! We actually go back to the field that she was photographed in and take family photos every year.

About a year later, I was photographing one of our weddings and our bride was a cancer survivor! However, one of her bridesmaids was still fighting. I remember thinking that day that I needed to take as many photos and moments of her as I could. Then the thought popped into my head that I should offer her a free family photo session. But I completely chickened out. I think I even typed out the message. Unfortunately, I was so flustered by the words, what to say, and if I said them the right way, that I didn’t send it. AND I MISSED OUT! I missed out on a chance of obeying God.

A little more than a year ago, we had a very close friend named Erin pass away from cancer as well. She was such a light to all those around her. We had talked to her about doing photos but she was so sick that it just never happened. All the while, God continued to nudge me and cultivate this dream in me.

I strongly feel that God’s dream for me is to be able to bless people and families fighting the battle of cancer. Now some might think, why would you want photos during the hardest time in your life? Here is why! Photos have the ability to freeze time for a moment. Freeze the emotions and feelings. I want people to be able to look back at this time in their life and to see what they overcame, see how strong they are, and see those who lifted them up and helped them through it. This is my little dream.

Thank you for stopping by and reading about our story!

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overpowered it.
